These (and the Chinese Legal Tender ones that also just arrived) handle as well as last months Table Players. So something has definitely changed stock wise.

Since this thread was merged, I lost the post that had a nice checklist of all the inspiration packages used for all the Table Players.
I know this thread has them, but I thought I remember someone posting a nice convenient checklist as well.

I opened up my gilded TP (er, Table Players, that is) and noticed the registration on the cards was off just a wee bit... like, to the point where you might mistake a picture of it for a picture of a USPCC-printed deck.

Nothing worth quibbling over for me, or asking to trade for another deck, but it's the first time I've noticed it since he switched printers for the TPs. (It might not even be the first deck I've opened with this issue, and I'm not going to look back through my TPs to check just now; it just happened to catch my eye this time.)

Note: I should note that I do like this deck. I like the muted colors of the otherwise standard courts.

I'm trying to add product inspiration images to my personal digital image library for each Table Players deck. Is there a handy checklist somewhere listing all of the inspirations in one place? I have many of them from the last few pages of this thread, but some are missing or undocumented. Here is one I located for those who are keeping track. Table Players 22 is inspired by a vintage Carling A-I beer can.

Where is the line between "inspired by" and simply copying a design? Or does it not matter when you're dealing with "vintage" products? Or a totally different product (i.e. playing cards vs. cigarettes)?
Genuinely curious, because in my opinion there is very little original work here...

It's just a clever and unique way to present each new deck in the series, inspired by vintage beer or cigarette packaging so far. So they are more of an homage than copying.

i certainly understand the sentiment here. i have a feeling if someone else besides JR were doing decks like these they would be flogged in the town square for the worst of mortal evils, copying art.

If they were claiming it as original, yes. But, JR has been very clear where the art is coming from.

I completely agree with brownsl here: designers who don't acknowledge their source material are the ones who get flogged. Those who are above board on their sources, no worries. Those whose homages are well done, so much the better.

Clearly this is very subjective, but an homage has to be something other than an exact copy, doesn't it?

Again, this is just my opinion, but I understand an Homage to reference or mimic the style of the original, not to simply copy the exact design and change a few words or minor details.

I also have never said that KWP doesn't acknowledge the source. Don't take this as a attack on KWP, although I do agree that JR sometimes gets cut some slack where others wouldn't.

I would like to better understand that line between a copy and an homage. Or is it OK to straight up copy something for your own purposes, as long as you acknowledge the source?

It is interesting to hear your opinions, and I'm not surprised that the boundary is different for each of us.
Keep it Sizzlin'!

Might be a philosophical take but I'm a firm advocate of The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.
Humans are visual beings and grasp the world by imitation. It's how we learn to walk, learn to talk and almost everything else. Being in the stage of life where I see a lot of friends and relatives having kids and seeing my own offspring growing up, just confirmed that for me.
True originality is a trade only mastered by a tiny fraction of humans. You could even say only fringe individuals are capable of that.
Therefore I don't have any problems at all with illustrators/designers/artists taking inspiration, remixing, revisit, reimagine, copying... or however you wanna name it.
As a consumer we often forget why artists are doing these things: they love to play around with stuff. Just like a beat producer loves to slice and mix samples, Jackson loves to play around with old designs and the packaging he enjoys. For artists it's about the journey and not so much about the product itself. I grant him all the fun he has with those designs.
For me it shows character to give credit for the source. I don't take it as a necessity though. It's kind of the consumers duty to educate yourself about a topic to be able to see where certain inspirations come from imho. I even enjoy it, when I discover stuff myself and not being handed the source right away.

I can't tell you exactly where I draw the line of enjoying the homages though. In the case of the Table Players I find some nicely done and well designed but never purchased one of them. Overall - from my subjective pov - it's a pretty boring series. The Vintage Reimagined does speak more to me but the prices hold me back there. I know there still goes a lot of working hours from Jackson into them but I never felt like there're worth the price - for me personally. I got an El Dorado, because I most likely will never own an original and it's one of my favorite decks of all time (the original that is).

Tuck box printed by USPCC? China printers became so good, they even start to get sloppy like the big boys.

This was the deck that convinced me to cancel my Table Players sub. It's not a bad deck. But it's also not a great one or one I need on my shelf. And while they don't handle as badly as the first few decks he used this printer for, it's still pretty mediocre. I'll pick up the ones I like separately as they release on the site from now on.

Isn't that the beer that Longmire drank (starring an Aussie!)

Is there anything in the deck other than the color scheme that refers to or illustrates Rainier?

these decks have gotten quite uninspired. basically, simple dual logo backs with his standard courts pasted in. very simple tuck designs. they would seem right at home right next to the $4 cads at a gas station.
