Card Scanning update

Unread post by macstrat »

Hey all, Wanted to give a quick update on the card scans and address a question:

first: my scanner died and I had to get another one. It is a different type and im still calibrating my photoshop actions to adjust for the new images. The Bicycle Astronaut Snoopy was one of the first. so its getting there, but still not to happy with the results. Over time these will be dialed in a little more so thank you for your patience on that

second: To address the lines people have mentioned in the scans:
This one was a puzzle, and one that after consulting with my local college as well as epson resulted in an interesting answer: its a type of moire pattern.

We tested scans on 10 different scanners ranging from 300dpi to 4000dpi using 30 different decks (1629 cards*10 scanners*6 DPI variations an average = 130320 Total image pool) ranging from standard bikes to highly foiled (Montezi Hello Tiki, KWP Sherlock Holmes, and S17 Cartomancer, Italia Divina), to heavy ink saturation (NOCs, Bicycle Double Black, Grid Series 3). On at least 1:40 scans, these lines appeared to varying degrees. It was concluded that the texturing on the cards finish are causing an optical flaw. This is most visible on large fields of a single color, with white and black having it the worst. Some decks have it worse, others not at all, but the large color fields resulted in a 1:15 odds of the lines showing up. Color restoration and descreening filters and JPG compression artifacts had no impact on results. For the heavy ink saturation, the other largest flaw we found was inadequite ink coverage over large fields, this also did not appear to influence the results, and is to be expected when you look at anything at 25x normal size.

Interesting note: the decks had about a 20 year creation range. so we were able to test Ohio made USPCC decks also. the more recent decks (<5 years old) had a higher chance (1:25 as opposed to 1:70) of encountering this issue. so its possible USPCC has changed something int eh way they texture the cards within this time frame, but cannot confirm this. This is not a confirmation that it is an exclusively USPCC issue, however because it did occur on decks from across the spectrum of card printers tested.

I thought you said your scammer died and you had to find a new one and I was very confused.
I've spent way more than I care to admit on playing cards, but I'll still buy just about anything that Lorenzo, Jackson, or Gio make.

that deck has quickly become one of my goto test for all kinds of imaging. Its so hard to read and the dark ink on dark foil on a dark bg causes TONS of issues

His name was Ted. In his will he left me a letter explaining the benefits of my cars extended warranty. Felt lost without his constant phone calls so I had to find a new one. [MURRAY]

Ah, Ted. I remember him well. Murray gave an excellent eulogy at his funeral, and then thanked us all for attending his Ted talk.

I'm happy about the switch from flickr to piwigo. Way better to browse on mobile.

I agree the search and categorization is much better on on piwigo. I really appreciate all the work you put into the scans and hosting them. At least once a week I find myself looking up a new deck or checking out an old deck. Thank You!

The card scan archive is a brilliant project.

Bravo macstrat for making a terrific resource, and for sharing it!
