Collecting Playing Cards - Lee Asher - Conjuror Community

Unread post by DelMagic »

While I realize that most people here wouldn't need something like this, I still want to post this opportunity because it is directly related to this site and because how often do you see something like this?

Lee Asher will be giving a "living room lecture" for the Conjuror Community, and you can get a one month subscription to the CC for just $1 at this time. This will allow you to watch Lee's lecture and gain access to a lot magic videos on the CC website.

:ucstar: Part of Lee's lecture will focus on collecting playing cards. :ucstar: (See some ideas given in the link below.) If you are a magician, I encourage you to use the $1 offer. It really is a good deal. I'm sure you'll get $1 worth of magic from Lee's lecture. Regular monthly access is a lot more, so I always cancel after the month is up, or a few days early even, but some might see enough to want to continue with it.

He's been selling them every now and then, at varying prices. He'll probably keep doing that until he's left with however many he wants to keep for himself.

I think he's already reached that point since I don't believe he's sold them for at least a few years now.

The Lee Asher lecture will be starting soon. If you have taken advantage of the $1 membership for a month, make sure you have registered for the lecture. If you have, you should have received a link to the lecture in your email. You will need to download the Zoom software if you don't have it on your system yet.

If you still need to register for the lecture, here is the link.

If you need to do the $1 membership first, check the first post.

I watched the lecture last and that was tough on the east coast. It started at 10:00 PM and ran until 2:00 AM.

First I will report on the card collecting aspects. I would say there was not a lot directly discussed dealing with the five points listed in the advertisement for the lecture so that was mildly disappointing - but see my final comments later. Lee went over quite a bit of history - both personal and more general - especially the U.S. production of playing cards. I thought it was interesting and informative though I am sure some people may not care for that. He discussed the major deck makers from the late 1800's until the 1930's - many of which ended up as part of USPCC. I never knew the interesting story behind the Bulldog Squeezer decks. Lee has a substantial interest in both current new decks and antique decks and showed some examples of each. For magicians who are familiar with magic from the 60's -90's you might appreciate the information on the Fox Lake line of decks.

He discussed deck storage, but there was nothing really new there. He likes Carat Cases and then just stores a lot of decks in his drawers. He never did say how many Jerry's Nuggets are left.

At the end of the lecture, I think people realized that the deck collecting topic was not covered all that well and Lee was asked if he would come back and do lecture just on card collecting. He agreed to do that. I certainly wanted to see more in this area, but I thought it was informative and interesting nonetheless.

The magic section was very long and thorough - a little too thorough for my taste. This may just be due to my impatience, but I thought many of the explanations went too long. Now the reason that happened was because the CC hosts and the online watchers kept asking for repeats of the handlings - so it wasn't Lee's fault. I just kept thinking, "You can watch this again online and pause and rewind it to your heart's content, so why keep repeating it now?" In any event, if you were interested in the magic, you were not short-changed on the instructions.

The Asher Twist - No matter how often Lee may say it, but I don't think the Asher Twist is all that easy to do. It is absolutely beautiful in his hands. It looks like real magic.

The self-working poker deal was not really self-working, but it was still a rather easy effect to do. The final revelation and display of the royal flush was awesome.

The losing control is superb and not all that difficult to do once you get yourself acclimated to the odd handling. This sleight is so useful it made the whole night worth the effort.

The Thunderbird Aces was spectacular but I doubt I'll do it. Definitely a long-term investment in practice for that.

The finger cruncher box doesn't appeal to me at all, but I suppose I can try it and see how it plays. It was explained thoroughly and is easy to do.

If you were only a deck collector, the lecture was probably a major disappointment if you managed to watch it all - and I bet few did that. For myself, a magician who collects decks, I was very satisfied with the lecture - even with the slow pace.

Anyone who took advantage of the $1 for 1-month of membership in the Conjuring Community to see the Lee Asher lecture, you need to turn off repeat payments in PayPal if you have not done so yet. Otherwise, you will have a surprising charge show up in your PayPal account.
