New custom deck I'm creating

Unread post by chyaboi_pedro »

Hey guys, new here but I wanted to show you guy a little idea I had for a deck of cards.. It's a little artistic and expressive but it shows different emotions. This one as you can hopefully tell is sadness so everyone in this card is sad. The back of the card I like but, I'm not sure what others would think about it. For the distinction between the king's, queen's and jack's it will mainly be on the letter and symbol in cohesion with the different emotion depending on the suit. The aces would take up the theme of feelings and the symbol would be used but with the feeling brought in to it as in like weeping or exploding with anger. Tell me what you think and don't hold back! Thanks for the feedback and letting me bother you guys! πŸ˜†

This is an interesting look. Though to be honest it creates an eye feel that I am not sure about. The negative space overpowers your doodles in an overall effect. As you, the person drawing, focuses on your particular creation often times the visual impact of the viewer is the whole. Giving our, the viewer, eyes a place to focus is like giving a person running track a start line. There is no start line that I can see on the card back. No shape that says "focus here first" to our eyes. It could be as simple as starting small in the center and ending large on the outer edges or reverse or any number of ways to accomplish that to improve eye feel. Could be something to consider.

I can't comment more as I only see one face card and I'm afraid I don't understand it. I think the story it's trying to tell needs some other cards to help convey it.
TL:DR It's completely up to you.

First of all thanks a lot for taking the time to look at the card and even writing a well thought out review. Although this is early stages, the card back, when thinking about it, was a struggle. I couldn't think of something that looked good to go with this mainly artistic style. So the bringing back the heads seems like a good idea. But there was something off when I made the mockup and I just couldn't out my finger on it but you nailed it...

It's exactly what you said, there's no key element that takes the attention from the others so your eyes are just wondering around. Although I would love to add something more classic for the card back to differ from the style, I'm afraid it won't match the overall style of the deck but with this change I think I can make a better card back and with more sense.

Thanks a lot and I'll keep you updated. Although I don't know how it works here with updating posts and posting pictures on the same subject. So if you want you can follow me on Reddit and shoot me a message so I keep you updated and anyone else directly and through posts!

The colors really help out. The bright color gives your eye a focus and the shape of the blue images create an overall larger image that assists in flow. It lets the eye move over the image without feeling uncomfortable. I think these changes (Of course I noticed the shapes of faces have been resized and some new ones added, etc.) has made a huge improvement to the overall effect. I'd warn there is a little odd feel with the negative space between the images in some places but it's not too distracting.

The tuck box also looks good, I like the overall feeling of class it gives from your font and three colors on the upper portion of the tuck while the bottom section has your art. The tuck box design has an inviting overall feel in my opinion. It's a very strong tuck and I'd say from the look of your work you're having a great time with the designs. Good things. :)
