Nerds VS Jocks Decks - Launching on Tuesday (KS)

Hey Everyone,
My buddy, Mike, and I are launching our newest project on Tuesday, March 31st (Noon EDT)! Mike and I did the OCULUS and Pollock Decks together, and he’ll be running this Kickstarter as well.
The Nerds VS Jocks Decks will be printed by Expert Playing Cards (TAIWAN Printer). Both Tucks will have Premium Matte paper stock and strategic areas of UV Spot Ink at the beginning, with Embossing and Interior Printing Stretch Goals as well.
The designs for the Nerds VS Jocks Decks are bold, colorful, unique and totally bitchin’! The look is inspired from classic 80s movies that are lighthearted and fun, and occasionally center on a Nerds VS Jocks storyline. Included are lots of nods to some of our favorite 80s characters, outfits and props, plus references to the overall flashy vibe that made the 1980’s so grand.
There will be plenty of 24 Hour EARLY BIRDS!
Here’s the Kickstarter PREVIEW LINK:

Really like the design of these and have been excited since you first showed them a few months ago. Especially like the costume case for only 4 decks, very few campaigns offer it, other should take notes, ca I often don't need 6 decks haha
But unfortunately wont be able to back it, due to losing my source of income due to the Covid situation. I hope you still get funded. But especially that other campaigns are maybe pushed back a few months so some of us manage to get back on track

All the best

Cool and fun I suppose but all the references will go over my head in a wooooosh.

Love it! Wish it were a different printer but I'll still be pledging.

AlvareszPt - I’m glad you like the design! I’m sorry about your job loss in these crazy times. We thought about delaying the launch, but it looks like Playing Cards on Kickstarter are still funding well.
OVSUB - The good thing about the design is you don’t really need to know the specific nods to appreciate it. Most of them just look like cool Nerds or Jocks at first glance!
vasta41 - Hey Paul!! I’m glad you like them!
I will almost always print non-freelance designs with Expert or Legends. I can’t stand dealing with all of USPCC’s red tape and constantly changing rules (plus their trim registration is just atrocious). After talking with Jirs quite a bit at last October’s 52 Plus Joker, I decided to try to print a Licensed design with Cartamundi. After a very slow back-and-forth through e-mails, and not getting very far on answers, I just gave up on the project (before even getting a chance to start on the design). I still want to do it, so hopefully this new employee handling communication for custom deck projects does a good job.
It’s my opinion that Expert and Legends’ Taiwan printers have the best overall service. Their printing, trim registration and handling are all top-notch and consistent. And communication with Expert and Legends is exceptional!!
Thanks, Randy

Thank you again to Randy for the prototypes, totally radical decks.

I'll have to agree with Rich K in the preview comments about having the Nerds and Jocks decks be fully Nerds and fully Jocks for their respective themed decks. I see a tribute to Revenge of the Nerds movies and other similar movies.
But can we consider a stretch goal for the courts to be fully nerds and jocks? I think we can includes the Nerds/jocks of the 2000's. E-sports, Parkour, cosplay, toycollectors and Social media can new courts for the 2000's. (We can throw in cardistry as a new Jack for the nerds and magicians as the Jack for the Jocks. very appropriate considering how Magic is now cool and how they view cardists as part of the stereotype!)
Just my humble $0.02.

Hey Eric,
Since I’ve spent the last 4 months (1 to 2 hours at night) working on the 12 custom Courts, I’m not chomping at the bits at the idea of spending another 4 months creating 12 new custom Nerds and Jocks Courts.
12 custom Courts is always a daunting task. They are, by far, the toughest challenge of a custom Deck!
24 custom Courts would be like working on two completely different designs back-to-back. I know there’s a handful of designers that have different Courts for each variation of Deck for a particular theme, but they’re usually not all custom. In most cases, there’s 12 custom Courts as the base. Then the other Deck variations are usually just slight variances between the base Courts, second version Courts, third version Courts... usually different hair style, different weapon, different background, different colors...
What you and Rich are suggesting would mean 24 completely unique Courts (not 12 base Courts with 12 slightly revised Courts). Example - there’s no way to take the current King of Hearts Jock as the base, and simply turn him into a Nerd. It would mean scraping everything in the Jock KOH and drawing new Nerd outfits, props and such.
Part of the fun of doing a custom Deck is planning it all out. Splitting the Deck in half makes complete sense. Gameplay with Playing Cards is often reliant on Red Courts vs. Black Courts. So having the Red Suits as the Jocks and the Black Suits as the Nerds truly creates a versus mentality.
I plan many of my Decks with the Red vs Black setup. The Black Suits for the Wild West Decks focuses on characters important to the town of Deadwood. The Red Suits for the Wild West Decks focuses on characters important to the overall region of The Black Hills. The Black Suits for the Rome Decks focuses on people who were ultimately against Julius Caesar and Augustus. The Red Suits for the Rome Decks focuses on people who were with Caesar and Augustus until the end.
The idea of incorporating modern Nerds and Jocks wouldn’t fit with this theme. Nerds and Jocks from the 1980s are a LOT different than their modern counterparts. Modern nerds are much more stylish, successful and mainstream. Jocks are now almost like a nerd of their particular sport. Just look at the NFL. Tom Brady is pretty much a sports nerd and jock all in one! Modern jocks are scientific with the way they eat, workout and study gameplay. Modern nerds are inventors of gadgets that almost everyone in the world use (computers, smart phones...). Merging the 80s and modern styles just wouldn’t work. A modern Nerds and Jocks design would be more of a future spinoff design.
Thanks, Randy

Wow, thanks for spending so much time explaining this. Really appreciate the details and gives me better appreciation for your earlier decks now with the Black and Red themes
I do understand as few have the time like JR to knock out decks every month and has his own crew to manage the business side of things.
Regardless, I love your designs and work . Definitely backing this one when it comes out.

I was going to pass as part as my cutting down the hobby but I basically have everything Randy did since day 1 and I do love his style. So I am in for a 4 pack... I'm weak

I love the concept and I love the level of customization... but there's something wrong with this picture.
Maybe it's the standard courts with standard expressions in wacky contexts? That's my best guess as to why I'm passing. Honestly, nice work, just not for me.

Wonding why these great decks are stuck at 70% for days now.
Randy's decks usually reach their goal in 1-2 days.

I like the idea and the execution is absolutely solid but it has just not the kick it needs for me to be in on the decks.

Eh, we’re just gonna let it play out and see what happens. I was just texting with Mike today, mentioning that this is the last whimsical / fun design I’ll be doing for many years (this and King of Tigers). The whimsical themes are getting harder and harder to fund on Kickstarter. If people aren’t into the theme, they just ignore it.
Luxury Decks are just about the only designs that do well nowadays on KS, so time to go back to that (which I think is a lot easier than the whimsical designs).
Our backup plan for Nerds VS Jocks is to self-fund a 1,000 print run of the Jocks Deck (Matte Tuck + Clear UV). We would print it along with our next project together (and have them available as BackerKit add-ons and then on my website after fulfillment.
I do a lot of Midwest Comic Cons and summer and holiday shows, and the casual Playing Card consumers are much more into the whimsical designs and themes that don’t do well on KS (the Euchre Decks sell like crazy at the shows!). And a lot of them should relate well to the 80s theme, I think.
Thanks, Randy

Although I think you might be right it's very disheartening to hear. I have luxury deck overload and would love to see more "whimsical" decks, like these, out there. But sadly that's just not the case. Guess I'm in a minority

congrats on getting funded. I am still on the fence. Of course your Caesar decks of several years ago was a favorite of mine and one of the earliest Kickstarter projects I backed. Your Pollock decks were also one of my all-time favorites. I am not into modern art, so that surprised me.
One complaint though. I back a ton of your projects, and i got flooded with a ton of emails about the launch. I got it already.

You can actually choose to mute completed projects from sending you updates, I do this as it makes sense that a creator would send to all their past projects (can't be sure if there is overlap between them or not) and once something is delivered I can't think of a time I got information specific to that project that I might have not heard elsewhere. I leave the most recent one unmuted (except in the case of TCC projects in which case I have muted them all beause I never want to buy anything from them again).

How do you do this? I do not see a way to mute a completed project. I have also backed hundreds of projects and would love to be able to hide projects that have completed and which I have received the reward but can't do that either. With this many projects, it is a pain to scroll through all the completed projects trying to find ones that have not been fulfilled yet.
To keep this on topic, I like a lot of Randy's decks but will be passing on these.

Quite easy actually. Just click on your account image in the top right and click on settings. There is a tab at the top that says notifications and you can manage which projects you get updates from there.
