Re: [Chuqii] KEM collection and lots of antique and vintage decks from all over
It's been a while since I came across a new Andrew Dougherty Outing deck, so I thought I'd go ahead and share it.
A. Dougherty Ace of Spades, c1910. I have had no luck tracking down what type of bird is on this deck, and I couldn't find a similar deck on Worthpoint, either. I'm a bit freaked out by that bird in the middle. Does it have two heads? Is one stacked on another? Were they trying and failing to make this not a one-way back design? Don't stare too closely. But if you know what kind of bird this is, please let me know.

Kiwi bird isn’t it?
Perhaps not, wings and all…
should be a game bird
American/Eurasian Woodcock or Wilson's/Common Snipe?
perhaps Long-billed dowitcher

The AoS certainly appears to be a kiwi and I wonder whether you might be right that the back is a poor attempt at making it a 2way back

I’m going with woodcock for the coloration - and round vs pointy tail
it seems these drawings were artistic back then - being a “generic game bird” thus it is probably “snipe/woodcock ish”
the flanking animals seem a bit less than anatomically correct as well

Put this together and thought I would post it. Hochman does not have the middle two of these Bee Aces of Spades, so I thought it would be nice to have them altogether in a family pic. I am pretty sure the order is correct.

To tie in with the Bee Aces of Spades from my previous post, here are some scans of a 1916 NYCCC Price List for today's Ephemera Friday (first three images - not sure of the year for the last image). Check out those old back designs (especially Back No. 196).

Another deck from the archives today. c1920, this is a Golf brand deck from Midland Playing Card Co. Midland would go on to become the much more well-known Western Playing Card Co. around 1927. Deck has a great back design and a good, sturdy feel. My deck does not have a joker, but I have one in my joker singles collection that is appropriate for this deck so I threw it in the pic.

Re: [Chuqii] KEM collection and lots of antique and vintage decks from all over
Mailman Monday! Mailman disappointed today, so it is back to the archives for this set 50 year-old Stud Playing Cards for Walgreen's made by USPCC in the 1970s. These are dated to the 1970s by the Chicago address with 5 digit zip code on the sides of the tuck, lack of bar code, and the "B" (1976) and "U" (1975) on the Aces of Spades. Pics show front, back and all sides of the tuck. As always, if you want to learn more about the history of Stud playing cards, check out this thread over at The Discourse: https://www.playingcardforum.com/index. ... ic=13807.0

The image and the letters are raised a bit, so I'd say it was embossed.

Re: [Chuqii] KEM collection and lots of antique and vintage decks from all over
Mailman came through for today's Mailman Monday. Today we have a gorgeous deck from Arrow Playing Card Co. with its original address of 800 South Sibley in Chicago. Company was at that location from 1927 to about 1931. Arrow would change its name in 1933 to ARRCO. This deck is gilded with gold reflective ink on the card back and a colorful Art Deco design on the card back. Box is labeled 701 Warwick Playing Cards. After much searching, I found the name under "ENDORSED BY" is Wilbur C. Whitehead, an American Auction and Contract bridge writer and player. I am not 100% sure which way the back design is supposed to go, but I think it's the one on the left. Enjoy!

Ephemera Friday, once again, and presenting a selection of antique single deck cases. The built-in game counters are nice. Added a catalog page c1895 that shows one of these playing card cases.

Back to the Archives today. Here is a deck of Dauntless Playing Cards with a tax stamp cancellation date of 1919. Stamp was cancelled by MPCCo, which is Midland Playing Card Co., one of the precursor companies to Western Playing Card Co. Sides of the box state "Perfect Slip" and "Satin Finish".

I saw this when flicking through Hochman and it reminded me of Chuqii's Kiwi AoS. (Apologies for the poor quality)Chuqii wrote: ↑Fri Jul 18, 2025 5:10 pm It's been a while since I came across a new Andrew Dougherty Outing deck, so I thought I'd go ahead and share it.

Great find, and it reminded me that I have singles of each of the DuPont Explosives decks in my collection. I found more info from the Potter & Potter site that shows the brownish back design is Woodcock and the green back design is Quail. Here is the side by side comparison and the Potter & Potter page pic. Here's a link back to my Outing post: viewtopic.php?p=264713#p264713

For today's Ephemera Friday I have a c1898 ad for the USPCC Mystic No. 888 brand, "A fine line of Secret Society cards." From my singles collection I included the 4 of these that I own. Still need that Goat back.

Re: [Chuqii] KEM collection and lots of antique and vintage decks from all over
Mailman is running late, so back to the Archives we go. Here is a narrow Moon No. 1 deck from Andrew Dougherty c1910. The neat thing about this deck is the back design. I showed in a previous post how an old Tally-Ho back design was repurposed for a Lord Baltimore Poker decks ( viewtopic.php?p=230178&hilit=tally+ho#p230178 ). Here, the back design of this narrow Moon No. 1 deck was originally a National Card Co. Tennis back design called Antique, as shown in the lower left of the advertisement c1890. United States Printing Co merged with National Card Co in 1894 to form United States Playing Card Co, and then USPCC took over Dougherty in 1907. Then Moon No. 1 came out around 1910 with one of the old National Tennis back designs. For the poker size Moon No. 1 deck with the great Moon joker, scroll down on this post: viewtopic.php?p=192967&hilit=moon#p192967

Re: [Chuqii] KEM collection and lots of antique and vintage decks from all over
Sunday combo! Mailman Monday and Ephemera Friday combine for this hitherto unknown deck from E.E. Fairchild - Crusader. I used to not think that EE Farichild made poker size decks, because I never saw any. That changed a few years years ago when I found out about the poker size 5 Star deck ( which you can see here: viewtopic.php?p=233030&hilit=fairchild#p233030 ). So I thought that was the only EE Fairchild poker size deck. Now I found Crusader, and I found the 1933 patent info for the name of the deck. This is the same Crusader name and font that is found on later Whitman Crusader decks, so maybe Whitman took over or bought out EE Fairchild at some point. Always fascinating is the history for some of the lesser known card makers.
Update - I checked one of my Whitman Crusader decks, and turns out it is a similar logo, but not the same.

Mailman Monday! I got a big box of cards, so let's get to it. c1930, here is another Arrow Playing Card Co. narrow size Warwick deck, this time with a colonial gent silhouette, perhaps good ol' Geroge Washington. And you will note the contract bridge scoring card put together by Wilbur C Whitehead, the same fella whose signature was on the other Warwick deck I posted above. This deck is sweet and unused with brilliant gold edges.

Re: [Chuqii] KEM collection and lots of antique and vintage decks from all over
I've posted about my printing proofs / samples before ( see viewtopic.php?p=235933#p235933 ), but now I finally have a deck to match one of them, but in a different color scheme.
No. 126 Pageant, nice deck with reflective inks on the card back. c1926.
Here's hoping I can track down some of the others, as well.
And as I was posting the above, it clicked for me that the Back No. 7 advertised on my as yet to be seen Square Deal No. 6 Allover Club Backs printing proof / sample is the same back design and number as the quite hard to find Aristocrat Allover No. 7 back.

Back to my big box of cards for some more 1920s bridge cards. Today's election is a matched set of Western Playing Card Co (W.P.L. tax stamp cancellation) Flight playing cards with one of the earliest Western jokers. Cards have metallic gold inks and the backs and boxes. Love those funky Western courts.

Re: [Chuqii] KEM collection and lots of antique and vintage decks from all over
Still digging into my big, box of cards with this c1940s custom advertising deck by Schering. Great courts and jokers, but the card back is a bit basic.

Re: [Chuqii] KEM collection and lots of antique and vintage decks from all over
For today's Ephemera Friday, I post a pic of my recently updated 1940 "Blue Book of Quality Merchandise" from Bennett Brothers, Inc. 450 pages of all sorts of vintage items, but what is great about the 1940 edition is the page on KEM cards. I've posted some of the info here previously ( see viewtopic.php?p=117399#p117399 ), but I've never posted the whole page. So here you go. Note the mistake in the description of the KEM Lucite Set.

Mailman Monday, but he dropped these off a while ago. Today's selection is 3 decks from the 1933-1934 Chicago World's Fair, A Century of Progress. Cards are made by ARRCO, and it was around this time that the Arrow Playing Card Co. changed its name to ARRCO. These three decks depict the Avenue of Flags, Skyride, and Federal Building. Decks came in an attractive lift top box.
