Online shop for playing cards around the world

Unread post by Eric Lee »

Just so Roope isn't the only one flooding the forums with all those amazing and eclectic collection of decks , here's a Russian online shop that sells an amazing variety of decks from all over the world, including the Old Bible Playing Cards by Ze'ev Raban from Israel, a Saudi Arabia deck and a deck of Hell Playing cards from Malaysia!

(Hell Playing cards are a small part of the old Chinese belief of burning paper replicas of goods with the deceased so that they can enjoy those things in the afterlife. Almost everyone goes to Hell like Hades for the Greeks, Heaven is only for the gods.)

Best of all, they include scans of all/most of the non-standard cards so you know what you're buying.

I dream of a world where wars are fought only by having dance offs. I also dream that a Finnish playing card designer would exist. The former seems more likely to happend.

This is great. So many strange and unusual decks!

The Hell deck disappointed me slightly at first, was expecting regular playing cards made to resemble Hell Money, but they look quite mundane. Instead it's a deck printed on joss paper for burning so the dead can use it, which is actually even cooler. Makes me wonder if this is a common offering or this is a really rare "deck", I can't find anything else like it.

You'll probably only be able to find them from the traditional Chinese religious material shops and those funeral paper merchant shops. May want to check out if there's any such shops in the nearest big Chinatown.

In fact, I'll have to drop by and ask a nearby shop to see if they do have one of those for sale. Gambling is very big with the Chinese. :D In fact, they had a whole movie series called God of Gamblers and an old TV series called the Shell Game. Blows away almost any other Western gambling movie.

Same here, I half expected something like Jackson Robinson's currency series.

I haven't been able to get the Hell Deck off my mind. It's on a whole other level, cards not even intended for the living to use. It would be even more interesting to discover them at a Chinese market, but if someone finds these cheaper than $25 + shipping from Russia I'm sure I can find some way to work out an agreeable deal.
