Labyrinth - Kings Wild Project
Hey guys and gals. Wanted to show you some of my progress on a deck I teased on Instagram a few weeks back and got some good response from.
Labyrinth is a deck of playing cards that all the court cards are mazes and the only way to see the actual court cards is to complete the mazes on the cards. I plan on running this project on Kickstarter in February. I don't have any other details just yet like printer and such but thought it would be nice to start the conversation.
Each maze is hand drawn (no maze generators are used)
Side note, I plan on having an 8.5 x 11 coloring book that includes all of the mazes in the deck so if people would like to actually try and complete all the mazes they can practice before doing them "for real" on the actual cards.

Another awesome deck idea, Jackson! I look forward this deck and would definitely be in for at least one coloring book!

Yes it looks pretty fun. Kinds of reminds me of the Hedge deck by the Faro Company somewhat but Jackson's is more heavily maze oriented

There is also the Mazing deck, which is kinda cool too, but Jackson's is by far the most intriguing with the fact you have to complete the maze to see the courts.

This does have similarities to Hedge and Mazing, but they each have their own take that makes them all quite distinct from each other.
BTW: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/te ... and-a-turn
I love Jackson's idea here, and the companion book sounds like a must-get.
One thing that the Mazing deck had was that there was also a maze to follow completely throughout the deck. Very clever. (This was from the same guy who did the "Different" campaign.)
I am absolutely going to back this when it comes out. These will make excellent gifts!
PS: that timelapse was great to watch!

How are you doing this, Jackson? From keeping relatively low last few years to the sheer outburst of amazing creativity in 2018. I have to ask what was the catalyst for this creative output? Inquiring, non-creative minds want to know.
Thanks for sharing the video. Always a treat to get some insight into a creative's design process.

Re: Labyrinth - Kings Wild Project - Kickstarter Feb 2019
It looks like Jackson is pushing the envelope yet again. I am very intrigued by the idea but would like to see more of the courts and the backs. One idea that I had would to emboss the tuck in the form of a maze/labyrinth - that would be really cool. I am not sure how realistic it would be in terms of production but if it is possible to embroider the December sub decks, then I am hoping that embossing would not be an issue.

Re: Labyrinth - Kings Wild Project - Kickstarter Feb 2019
I have to agree there. Not sure many people will start using sharpie on their decks of cards.. How about the courts are pre-designed with the courts already traced out and anyone wanting to solve those mazes use the book instead. If not all court cards will be basically a white maze...vasta41 wrote:+1 Cool concept and I love when artists branch out with unique ideas but this one might not be for me.TwoPiece wrote:Very interesting. I knew someone would bring that up... Even if i don't open my decks, a bunch of blank courts does not appeal to me... Maybe 2 decks can be offered one with the courts drawn in and 1 without?

I agree. The other thing (and that has my entry-level OCD flaring up) is that I can use a sharpie pen but if it leaves a smudge, that would ruin the whole deck....badpete69 wrote:I have to agree there. I loved the time-lapse of designing one of the court cards. I used to make mazes for kids in Sunday School years ago. Brings back good memories.

Reminds me of the Bicycle Mazing deck though who wants to draw on their cards?

I got the Mazing deck. Had a photocopy shop blow up and copy the cards to A5 and spiral bind 2 sets. Gave it to my kids as an activity book. Planning to do the same for the courts for this one.

Re: Labyrinth - Kings Wild Project - Kickstarter Feb 2019
So here is the scoop on this two deck set.
When I created this deck, I did so by drawing the court card "solution" first then I drew the maze around it. Once people saw both versions of the deck, one being the version that didn't have the solutions and the other version that had the solutions, so many people expressed their want to have both. They wanted to have the novelty of the "you have to draw on the card yourself aspect" of the UNsolved Edition and the payoff of seeing the interesting "solved" court cards of the solutions. This factor leads me to actually create two different and unique editions of this deck.
The Subscription deck(s) both (Limited Edition - Black on Black version, Standard Edition - Black on White) was printed by USPCC and comes without the solutions on the court cards.
I printed 500 "Solved" Editions with EPCC, and all the court cards come with the mazes solved and the court cards revealed.
I produced 250 of these really cool two deck collector's sets that will come with one Standard "Unsolved" Edition and one "Solved" edition. There is no seal so if anyone wants to replace the standard edition with the Black on Black Limited Edition, they will be able to do so.
The other 250 "Solved" Editions will be sold individually on the "subscribers only" page first then if any are left after two weeks I will make them available to the public. The two deck set box is really nice and I had Clove Street Press Letterpress the simple red belly bands.

So, there are a lot of possibilities here for a clever magic trick using a card swap / color change.

Really looking forward to this set. This may have been discussed prior and I just missed it. But how will the two deck set affect the monthly subscription price?JacksonRobinson wrote: I produced 250 of these really cool two deck collector's sets that will come with one Standard "Unsolved" Edition and one "Solved" edition.
